Traditional building design has been largely reliant upon two-dimensional drawings (plans, elevations, etc.) whereas Building Information Modeling extends this beyond 3-D to a virtual ā5-Dā platform by enhancing the three primary spatial dimensions (width, height and depth) with time as the fourth dimension and cost as the fifth, making the use of BIM a crucial factor for design, implementation and sustainability with equal importance placed upon manpower and profitability. It offers enormous gains in saving in cost and time, much greater accuracy in estimation, and the avoidance of error, alterations and rework due to information loss. It describes the process of designing a building or project collaboratively using one coherent system of computer models rather than several separate sets of drawings. It is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility. BIM is an acronym for Building Information Modeling.
